CFB Week 12 Draft Scouting Watch Guide

Written by Jeff Risdon on November 18, 2016

After last weekend’s amazingly eventful college slate, this week lacks sizzle. Yet that can be the best time to evaluate prospects instead of being caught up in the emotion of the contests.

Ohio State at Michigan State 12 PM on ESPN

This game sure looked awesome back in August when these two teams were both in the Top 10. Ohio State held up their end of the bargain, but this is the worst Michigan State season in years. Last week snapped a 7-game losing streak and there will be no bowling for Sparty.

A lost season can be revelatory in the scouting process. Does a player keep going 100% on every snap, every game? Are they just going through the motions after the first quarter when they’re down 14-0 and don’t have a first down?

That’s what I’m looking for with Michigan State this week, specifically with their top two (read more…)

CFB Week 11 Draft Scouting Watch Guide

Written by Jeff Risdon on November 11, 2016

Back after a week hiatus which included me attending the Maryland/Michigan game and talking with an NFL scout before the game, I’m locked and loaded for the college football weekend.

Alas, this week features few marquee matchups. One of the most interesting came Thursday night with North Carolina and Mitch Trubisky–still my QB1–battling a spunky Duke team.

Baylor at Oklahoma, 12 PM on ABC/ESPN2

Sometimes I write too much and some readers lose interest. So I’ll keep this one brief:

Watch Oklahoma WR Dede Westbrook, a rising prospect who plays bigger than his size and is gaining respect for his all-around game. Picture Aaron Rodgers or Cam Newton at QB throwing to Westbrook with this sort of ability to separate over the top:

That’s it. You’re welcome.

Mississippi State at Alabama, 12 PM on ESPN

I’ve written about Alabama just about every week, so the focus (read more…)

Changing things up a bit this week. Instead of a broader view of more prospects in each game, I’ve opted to focus on one or two specific players in each of 10 games. Enjoy your college football and NFL Draft prep weekend!

All times Eastern

Air Force at Fresno State, 10:30 PM Friday on ESPN2

This game features one of the very first prospects to accept a postseason All-Star invite…

#AirForce WR Jalen Robinette has been invited to the @Shrine_Game. Told he received one of the 1st invites to the game. 6’4, 215, avg 27 YPC

Robinette has the coveted size with a big, muscular frame. He also has impressive open-field speed and gets to top gear quickly. Check out this TD from the New Mexico game:

Another weekend, another 50+ yd touchdown for (read more…)

CFB Week 7 Draft Scouting Watch Guide

NC State at Clemson, 12 PM on ABC

By now you know the Clemson draft names, from potential No. 1 overall pick Deshaun Watson to his favorite receivers in Mike Williams and Artavis Scott, solid RB Wayne Gallman and lockdown CB Cordrea Tankersley. They’re darn near a weekly feature, and for good reason; the Tigers are loaded with future NFL talent.

Watson has shown chinks in his armor, forcing passes and misreading both his receivers and the defense at times. He’s still got a whole lot to like, but it’s okay to be critical at this point. Last week NC State locked down his primary competitor to the top of the QB rankings, Notre Dame’s Deshone Kizer, though it says here Kizer will be back for the Irish in 2017.

That contest, in a literal hurricane, was my first in-depth 2016 look at Wolfpack RB Matthew Dayes. He impressed (read more…)

CFB Week 5 Scouting Watch Guide

Written by Jeff Risdon on September 30, 2016

This week’s edition is defiantly SEC-free! You’ll hear enough about the inherent awesomeness of the Southeastern Conference on the morning yakfests, and several SEC teams will make a triumphant return to next week’s column.

Stanford at Washington, Friday 9 PM on ESPN

The PAC-12 smartly puts its marquee game in prime time on Friday, where the entire football nation can watch two top-10 teams square off in Seattle.

Everyone knows Cardinal star Christian McCaffrey, the best playmaking RB in the nation and in this draft class. The obvious draft comparison is one McCaffrey himself has endorsed, Reggie Bush. Heck he even wears No. 5 in tribute to the former USC star, who had an uneven NFL career pockmarked by numerous injuries. McCaffrey is more sturdily built but just as explosive. Like Bush, I see him being a fantastic receiving RB but more hit-and-miss as a traditional runner at (read more…)

2016 Draft Prospectus Preview: LB Myles Jack

Written by Kyle Crabbs on March 19, 2016

This evening I finished my final Off Ball LB evaluation of the 2016 Draft Class.  To celebrate; tonight I’m going to be sharing my report on the player who has stood miles (pun intended) ahead of anyone else in the class since all the way back in October: UCLA Linebacker/Weapon of Mass Destruction Myles Jack.

I jumped the gun when news Jack was out for year, conducted full film eval already…he scored the highest film eval I’ve given in 3 years.

2016 Draft Prospectus Preview: RB Kenneth Dixon

Written by Kyle Crabbs on March 3, 2016

I took to Twitter this afternoon (@NDTScouting) for some recommendations for the first of my formal, final reports to bring over to Draftbreakdown in an effort to share some peeks at my work this Draft season. The name that stood out the most to me was La Tech RB Kenneth Dixon (a Reese’s Senior Bowl and NFL Combine standout). So check the link to see NDT Scouting’s Kenneth Dixon Report.
